A mitochondria-targeting tetrapeptide that concentrates on the inner membrane by binding cardiolipin, widely used as a tool compound in bioenergetics research.
SS-31 carries an alternating aromatic-cationic motif that drives selective accumulation in the inner mitochondrial membrane without requiring a receptor. It binds cardiolipin, and published work associates that interaction with stabilised cristae architecture, better-organised electron-transport supercomplexes, higher ATP output and reduced escape of reactive oxygen species. Notably it is not a conventional free-radical scavenger, which is what makes it a useful mechanistic probe.
